Are you a father in waiting?

Preconception planning is as important for the father as it is for the mother.  We’ve made a list of things you and your partner should keep in mind if you are planning to add a member to your family.

father babyExposure to harmful chemicals:  The health of the baby as well as a man’s fertility can be affected by exposure to chemicals in the workplace.  Exposure to radiation, herbicides, pesticides, biological hazards, anesthetic gases, mercury, lead or other health hazards can be detrimental to pregnancy.

Medications:  Some medications have been known to cause fetal abnormalities. Get in touch with your healthcare provider to find out whether any of the medication that you are on can cause infertility.

Exposure to X-Rays:  A recent study suggest that a baby’s growth rate may be affected by the father having X-ray exposure in the groin area.

Weight: Overweight men sometimes have more than normal quantities or the estrogen – the female sex hormone. This hormonal imbalance can impair a man’s fertility.

Injury to the groin:  There has been a lot of research which suggest that groin injury caused to athletes can impair sexual function. There have also been successful studies linking long distance cycling with impotence and numbness in the groin.

Quit the vices:  Alcohol abuse, drug abuse and smoking have been known to cause infertility and are generally considered detrimental to good health.

Protect your genitals:  Increased temperature of the testicles can cause reduction in sperm production. This may be caused by tight fitting clothes among other things.
